The Rosetta Stone: The Key That Unlocked Egyptian Writing
The Rosetta Stone is a granodiorite stele (about 114 cm tall × 72 cm wide × 28 cm thick, weighing roughly 760 kg), discovered in July 1799 at the town of Rosetta (Rashid) in the Nile Delta, and inscribed with the same decree — the Memphis Decree of 196 BCE in honor of Ptolemy V — in three scripts: 14 lines of hieroglyphs, 32 lines of demotic, and 54 lines of Greek. By making the Greek text available for comparison, it enabled Jean-François Champollion’s decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs in 1822 and gave birth to modern Egyptology. The stone has been in the British Museum since 1802 and is one of the most visited single artifacts in any museum. A Stone in a Fort
In the summer of 1799, a French military engineer named Pierre-François Bouchard was supervising repairs to a fort in the small port town of Rosetta (Arabic Rashid), on the western branch of the Nile about 65 kilometers east of Alexandria. While removing a wall, his men unearthed a heavy black stone, just over a meter tall, covered in carved text. Bouchard, an antiquarian at heart, recognized that the inscription was trilingual — the same text appeared in three different scripts, arranged in horizontal registers.
Rosetta was then a base of the French expeditionary force that had followed Napoleon Bonaparte into Egypt in 1798. The French had brought with them not just soldiers but a large corps of scholars, artists, and engineers — the savants whose work would eventually be published as the monumental Description de l’Égypte. Copies and squeezes of the new stone were quickly circulated, and scholars of the Institut d’Égypte in Cairo began work on it almost at once. One small footnote I think worth keeping in mind: Bouchard recognized the trilingual character of the stone almost immediately, and he was the one who insisted it be saved. He was a captain of engineers, not a philologist, and the credit for the discovery is rightly his.
The Three Texts
The stone, which dates to 196 BCE in the reign of Ptolemy V Epiphanes, contains a single decree issued by a council of priests assembled at Memphis. The text honors the boy-king and reaffirms the cult of the royal family, declaring tax exemptions for the temples, additional revenues for the priesthood, and a program of religious observances. The decree is written three times:
- At the top, in Egyptian hieroglyphs — the formal, sacred script.
- In the middle, in demotic — the cursive script of everyday administration in Ptolemaic Egypt.
- At the bottom, in Greek — the language of the Ptolemaic court.
The Greek was 54 lines and could be read at once by any classically trained scholar. The hieroglyphs, 14 lines, and the demotic, 32 lines, presented a far greater challenge, but the assumption that the three texts were identical or near-identical was the key that opened the door.
From French to British Hands
The Rosetta Stone did not stay in French custody for long. In 1801, British forces defeated the French in Egypt, and the terms of the surrender explicitly assigned “stones and inscriptions” found by the French to the British. After a brief negotiation, the stone was transferred to the British, who shipped it to the British Museum in London, where it has remained on display almost continuously since 1802. Its arrival there triggered two decades of intense scholarly work by British, French, Swedish, and German scholars, all racing to be the first to read the hieroglyphs.
Early Attempts at Decipherment
The first major attempt was by the Swedish diplomat Johan David Åkerblad, who in 1802 identified a number of demotic signs as phonetic spellings of proper names — but mistakenly concluded that demotic was an alphabetic script throughout. The British physician and physicist Thomas Young went further in a series of articles published from 1814 to 1819 under the title “Egypt.” Young established that the demotic and hieroglyphic texts were essentially the same, and he identified the cartouches of Ptolemy and his consort Berenice within the hieroglyphic inscription. He also recognized that some signs were phonetic and that the script contained a mixture of alphabetic and symbolic elements. But Young, working within a now-incorrect framework, never quite cracked the underlying system. The full breakthrough came in 1822 from a French scholar who had been working in parallel. What the Stone Actually Says
The Memphite Decree, as the text is now known, is one of a series of similar Ptolemaic synodal decrees issued by assemblies of Egyptian priests to honor the reigning king. Other copies have been found on temple walls at places like Philae and Karnak, but the Rosetta Stone is by far the best preserved. The text itself is less a work of literature than an administrative document: a list of benefits granted to temples and priests in exchange for the continued recognition of the king’s divine status. Its significance for Egyptology lies not in what it says but in the fact that it says it in three parallel scripts — a gift to decipherment that no other ancient inscription could match. A small specialist point: the demotic and the hieroglyphic versions of the decree are not word-for-word translations of each other. They have the same content but the phrasing has been adapted, which is the kind of thing that confused the first generation of scholars and is still worth keeping in mind when working with parallel texts.
The Stone’s Physical Description
The Rosetta Stone is a fragment of a stele that was originally larger. The bottom and the right side are missing, and the top is broken. The stone itself is granodiorite, a dark, dense igneous rock, and stands about 114 centimeters tall, 72 centimeters wide, and 28 centimeters thick. It weighs roughly 760 kilograms. The text is divided into three registers by horizontal ridges, and the surface is polished to a finish that has allowed the carved signs to remain crisply legible for more than two thousand years.
The Stone in Modern Times
In the twenty-first century, the Rosetta Stone has come to stand for any key that unlocks an unknown code — a usage that has spread from cryptography to molecular biology (the Rosalind Franklin team’s X-ray images of DNA were nicknamed “Photo 51” rather than the Rosetta, but the metaphor is the same). For Egyptologists, however, the stone itself remains a touchstone. Visitors queue at the British Museum to see it, and replicas are displayed in Egypt, France, the United States, and elsewhere. The French government has occasionally requested its return, but the British Museum has consistently refused, citing the terms of the 1801 capitulation.
Why the Stone Still Matters
Without the Rosetta Stone, the decipherment of hieroglyphs would have been possible in principle — eventually some bilingual inscription would have given up its secret — but in practice the stone accelerated the breakthrough by perhaps a century. With it, Champollion could compare a known Greek text against two unknown Egyptian scripts and deduce the principles of the entire system. Within a generation, scholars were reading texts inscribed two and three thousand years earlier. The Temple of Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and the Tombs of the Nobles opened up as readable documents. A whole civilization, in effect, found its voice.
